Artist's Comments

The colored version of lineart I made today. I had alot of fun with this piece. I really really enjoyed the Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory and this piece was completely inspired by those books. The characters aren't mine, they are property of those authors, etc. The books are a good read so I recommend the Trilogy to anyone interested in Fantasy books.

This piece shows 17-year-old Kellen Knight Mage, frustrated that he has to face yet again another Cave of Shadow Elves in winter. Shalkan, his quick-witted unicorn companion, is there and is of course warning Kellen that there are Shadow Elves in the Cave. Seems those creatures just love the dark and stuff and like to take a bit out of whatever creatures they can get a hold of.

Background is a snow-scape cause in the whole trilogy it is mostly winter XD

It will amuse everyone more if they read the books of course. But I hope you enjoy the art none-the-less.

I also used Wookiestock on DA's photography for my reference for Kellen. Please visit his page if you're looking for some good references and stuff! --> [link]

Ah! Another Obsidan reader! *bows*
Kellen looks really nice in this one. Quick question - why are his eybrows brown?
Shalkan looks awesome. *squeee!*
His neck is a bit long, but that's fine. It's a difficult angle to be drawing from. Magnificent work on the picture.

His eyebrows are kinda an "ode-to-the-illustrator" who made the paperback artwork (and I suppose the hardback too) cover art of "The Outstretched Shadow" (if you look his eyebrows there almost look black against blonde hair!)...I also made it that way since lil' Tavadon had darker hair in the beginning and the sun bleached his hair lighter when he was out of the City of Bells...so he gets crazy dark eyebrows (to fit his crazy life...poor guy). I kinda borrowed the style from other characters who had darker eyebrows against lighter hair. I guess I mainly was going with a whole 'change' thing with Kellen I suppose ^^;

And yeah, with Shalkan I was looking at both horse reference and deer reference...but it was hard to make him look like one and the other but also make him not look like them as described in the book...so I think that's how the neck got that way...

Thanks for the compliments :D If you want to view my latest fan art from the obsidian trilogy, go here: [link] The piece is called "Battle In the Snow" I'd love to hear another thought from another reader of these books! Did you read the newest one released? the new trilogy I mean called "The Enduring Flame?" the book itself is called "The Phoenix Unchained" I might make some fan art from that book eventuall :D

Anywho...thanks again!

Yeah - I got the book the day it came out. *sheepish smile*
I'm slightly obsessed with Mercedes Lackey, you see. I own all of her Heralds of Valdemar books, and I've read just about everything she's written...
The Wizard of London, the Elvenblood trilogy, in the Shadow of the Lion, the Dragon Jousters series...
*hides under a rock* Now that I've confessed to being a total sci-fi geek...

:D I'll have to get more books by Mercedes Lackey eventually (which one would you recommend reading first for someone that likes fantasy stories?). I've only read the Obsidian trilogy from Lackey so far. I've also read some stuff from Juliet Marillier, Gregory Maguire and like one trilogy from Jennifer Fallon. I just really like how the Obsidian Trilogy was handled with the two authors so I wanted to make some art for it since I was in the mood to draw and stuff :D. I may eventually create some other fan art from other trilogies I've read from different authors...but so far the Obsidian trilogy will be what I'm focused in modivated to draw stuff from :)

If you want to get into Mercedes' other work, I'd recommend starting with her Last Herald Mage Trilogy or The Arrows of the Queen Trilogy. Both are the best examples of her writing, in my opinion, and they set the stage for the rest of her novels.

I made another Obsidian piece (this time with Anigrel) [link] Check it out when you get a chance :)

I can't wait to try another series from Lackey! Sometime after the holidays I hope to get a chance to look at the bookstore for those titles you gave me.
